Quick answer: there’s no single processing time. It depends on the country you apply from and changes every week. Check IRCC’s official processing times tool, then add time for biometrics and any medical exam. Doctoral students applying from outside Canada have a two-week processing target.
Study permit processing times are one of the most searched questions about studying in Canada, and one of the most misunderstood. Here’s how to find the current time for your country and plan your application so you arrive before classes start.
This guide is general information based on official sources. Your own requirements depend on your situation, and IRCC makes every decision, so check the official pages before you apply.
How to check the current processing time
- Go to IRCC’s check processing times tool.
- Choose Study permit and whether you’re applying from outside or inside Canada.
- Select the country you’re applying from. The time shown is how long it took IRCC to process most applications recently, not a guarantee.
What adds time to your application
| Step | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Getting your PAL/TAL | Your school issues it after you accept your offer. Timelines vary by school and province. |
| Biometrics | After you pay and submit, IRCC sends a letter. You have 30 days to give fingerprints and a photo. |
| Medical exam | If required, book with an approved panel physician. Results go straight to IRCC. |
| Requests for more documents | Missing or unclear documents trigger requests and delays. |
| Passport request | If approved, you’ll be asked to send your passport for the visa, which takes extra days. |
Faster processing for doctoral students
Since November 2025, IRCC has a two-week processing target for doctoral students who apply online from outside Canada with a complete application. Eligible family members included with the application can also benefit. Master’s and PhD students at public institutions also no longer need a PAL. Read more.
A safe timeline
Work backwards from your program start date. Many students aim to submit their study permit application at least three to four months before classes begin, and earlier from countries with long processing times.
- Apply to schools early, then accept your offer and request your PAL quickly.
- Prepare your documents while you wait for the PAL.
- Submit a complete application and give biometrics as soon as you’re asked.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay to speed up my study permit?
No. IRCC doesn’t offer paid express processing for study permits, and anyone claiming to sell faster processing should be treated as a scam.
What if my permit isn’t approved before classes start?
Contact your school. Many allow you to defer to the next intake. Never travel to study without an approval.
How do I check my application status?
Sign in to your IRCC secure account. Status updates appear there.
